Rotifers in wastewater treatment. what they tell us about the process?
Rotifers are multicellular organisms. Usually they are the first metazoans to show up in biological wastewater treatment systems.
Unlike bacteria and protozoa, they are complex creatures with organs, jaws, and even distinct male and female individuals.
They don’t play a major role in actually breaking down pollutants, but they are excellent indicators of what’s happening in the system.
Because rotifers reproduce slowly (it can take half a day or more for a new generation to appear), their presence usually means that the sludge age is moderate - long. They are most common in systems with mature, well-settled biomass and stable conditions.
When you start seeing rotifers in increasing numbers, it often indicates that the SRT has increased. The system is older and less “hungry.”
Rotifers feed on bacteria, protozoa, and algae, cleaning up whatever is left over after the primary biological work is done.
In that sense, they are the “final polishers” of the microbial community, a sign that food levels are low and the biomass is well-aged.
However, rotifers should almost never dominate.
If they become the main organisms you see, it can mean the sludge age has grown too long, and the system may be drifting toward over-stabilization, reduced activity, or poor oxygen utilization.
Rotifers also provide important clues about toxicity:
Under harsh or toxic conditions, they can form protective shells, curling up like tiny turtles.
Seeing shelled rotifers is a clear warning that the biomass is under chemical or environmental stress.
So what does it mean when rotifers take over?
The process is aging.
The system is likely stable but possibly too mature.
It may be time to check wasting rates and oxygen levels.
